Asbestos in Chicago-area School Prompts Concerns

Officials from the Barrington Unit School District 220, located about 30 miles outside of Chicago, report that asbestos was found in three – possibly four – classrooms in the Sunny Hill Elementary School in the village of Carpentersville, prompting the evacuation of students from the affected areas. According to an article by Eric Peterson of the Daily Herald, residue from asbestos-based glue was found when maintenance workers were removing traditional white boards to replace them with new-fangled computerized Smart Boards. Tests performed after the finding determined that at least three or four of the seven classrooms in question contained the asbestos glue. A district spokesman noted that immediate efforts were made to contain the material and that the children assigned to those rooms have now been moved to other locations throughout the school. District officials maintain that the air quality of the rooms in question was tested and levels of asbestos were determined to be acceptable. It was noted that particles were “most likely” never released into the air in the classrooms, states another article about the situation that appeared in the Chicago Tribune. Schools erected prior to about 1980 are highly likely to have been built using asbestos-containing materials such as drywall adhesives , insulation, and floor and ceiling tiles. The presence of these materials can be dangerous when they become old and “friable”, releasing fibers that can be easily inhaled. Asbestos fibers can cause tumors to form in the lungs, resulting in a diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer years later. Since 1986, schools in the U.S. have been required to have asbestos maintenance plans in place and to train custodial workers to deal with potential asbestos emergencies and handling asbestos should a situation arise. Periodic inspections must be done in order to confirm that any asbestos materials remain in good condition or they most be removed or encapsulated so as to prevent asbestos exposure.

Molecular glue may rendermesothelioma tumors more vulnerable to chemotherapy | Mesothelioma News

Researchers at Canada’s University of Toronto Mississauga have discovered a new type of therapy that makes mesothelioma tumors more vulnerable to chemotherapy. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the protective lining of the lungs, heart, chest and abdomen that is caused almost exclusively by prolonged asbestos exposure. This terminal cancer has no cure and is very difficult to treat. Current mesothelioma treatment , which usually involves some combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, is palliative rather than curative and usually only prolongs a patient’s life by approximately a year. The Toronto university scientists have developed a new compound that is tentatively being referred to as glue. They have likened their study’s findings to the reaction between soap and grease. When soap is introduced into a sink of grease, the grease retreats to the sides of the sink, and the newly identified compound has the same effect on cancer cells. When the glue is introduced in a cancer cell, it forces the proteins to the cell’s membrane and makes the tumor cells more vulnerable to mesothelioma chemotherapy . This approach inhibits the mobility of cancer-promoting proteins within cells, making it molecularly-targeted glue. It binds the cancer-promoting proteins and sticks them to the cell membrane so that the mesothelioma cells cannot multiply out of control. “We are really excited about the potential for this type of drug,” says Professor Patrick Gunning, who developed the concept along with Professor Claudiu Gradinaru at U of T Mississauga and Professor James Turkson at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. “This is ready to move to preclinical studies, and this treatment could slow or stop the explosive growth of cancerous tumors. And for patients, this might reduce the need for really powerful chemotherapy, which can be very hard to tolerate.”
