Gov. Jay Nixon discusses his position on the federal health care law while speaking with reporters in Joplin on June 27, 2012. — Nixon: “It came out when I was at boys state. Before that, it came out at the Kansas City Star editorial board five months before that. It has come put anytime anyone has asked me that question, it is not something that just came to my mind yesterday.” Nixon: “My position on the individual mandate is clear. I don’t think the federal government should be telling people what they have to buy as far as private insurance. So, that has been my position throughout. I don’t think that is the proper role of the federal government.” Nixon: “I spend a very small amount of my time talking to congressional people as they’re doing what they’re doing in that sense. I am the governor of the state, it is a busy job, it has been a busy year. My focus is on what I can do here. Once that measure was there, I’ve clearly said things are challenging in it. I do think there are some things in it that are important. I think that getting rid of the lifetime cap on insurance policies for people who get very sick is an important step. I think if somebody gets sick and has an expensive treatment, that being able to make sure they can’t be taken off that insurance for cancer treatment or something like that is important.
