What Is Leukemia? — Dr. Luther Glenn, MD (AHJ BloodDisorders)

What Is Leukemia? What is leukemia? Dr. Luther Glenn, MD discusses with the American Health Journal video viewing community what leukemia is. Leukemia is a proliferation of white blood cells. The white blood cells grow uncontrollably. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Leukemia is cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Many types of leukemia exist. Some forms of leukemia are most common in children. Other forms of leukemia occur mostly in adults. Leukemia usually starts in the white blood cells. Your white blood cells are potent infection fighters — they normally grow and divide in an orderly way, as your body needs them. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces a large number of abnormal white blood cells, which don’t function properly. Treatment for leukemia can be complex — depending on the type of leukemia and other factors. But there are strategies and resources that can help to make your treatment successful.” www.americanhealthjournal.com Subscribe: www.youtube.com Facebook: www.facebook.com Twitter: www.twitter.com RSS: www.americanhealthjournal.com The American Health Journal is a highly rated, award-winning health care television program that airs on PBS and other national network affiliates which reaches over 30 million households. New Material Could Revolutionize Water Cancer Treatment, Water Purification

Watch: youtube.com slatev.com Follow twitter.com facebook.com Talk about a sea change! How about something that could turn salty ocean water into a crystal clear lake? Not enough for you? How about a cure for cancer, too? In a scientific wow moment with far-reaching implications, researchers have announced the creation of tiny artificial pores that can distinguish between ions of different substances. As small as the ones in your own cells, these pores were created by gluing donut-shaped molecules into stacked nanotubes with hydrogen. The microscopic tubes are capable of passing potassium ions in water while filtering out sodium and lithium ions. So a sieve of this stuff would turn a glass of Salt Lake brine into a refreshing potable quaff instantly. And with some extensive tweaking, scientists also think these artificial pores can be tuned to perform life-changing tasks like killing tumors and diseases by regulating what gets into cells. The tiny creation has the chance to make a huge impact on our future, filtering out all the things that contaminate our lives once and for all. Now, can we get one that makes water into wine?

3-D tumor models improve drug discovery success rate

Imagine millions of cancer cells organized in thousands of small divots. Hit these cells with drugs and when some cells die, you have a candidate for a cancer drug. But a new review argues that these 2-D models in fact offer very little information about a potential drug’s effects in the body and may often give researchers misleading results.
