Meditation And The Fight Against Cancer

Scientific studies reveal that meditation is an excellent supplementary treatment in the struggle against cancer. Not only will it lower discomfort and enhance your mood, but in addition data suggests that it increases immunity and even improves prognosis. Governor Nixon on individual mandate (06-27-2012)

Gov. Jay Nixon discusses his position on the federal health care law while speaking with reporters in Joplin on June 27, 2012. — Nixon: “It came out when I was at boys state. Before that, it came out at the Kansas City Star editorial board five months before that. It has come put anytime anyone has asked me that question, it is not something that just came to my mind yesterday.” Nixon: “My position on the individual mandate is clear. I don’t think the federal government should be telling people what they have to buy as far as private insurance. So, that has been my position throughout. I don’t think that is the proper role of the federal government.” Nixon: “I spend a very small amount of my time talking to congressional people as they’re doing what they’re doing in that sense. I am the governor of the state, it is a busy job, it has been a busy year. My focus is on what I can do here. Once that measure was there, I’ve clearly said things are challenging in it. I do think there are some things in it that are important. I think that getting rid of the lifetime cap on insurance policies for people who get very sick is an important step. I think if somebody gets sick and has an expensive treatment, that being able to make sure they can’t be taken off that insurance for cancer treatment or something like that is important. There are parts of this that are there. I think that , I don’t see myself as a constant and consistent commentator on what is going on in DC. I have …

Georgetown study finds single protein promotes resistance to widely used anti-estrogen drugs

Researchers at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center have uncovered a single molecule they say is a major determinant of resistance to anti-estrogen therapy used to treat or prevent breast cancer in high-risk women. In the July 1 issue of Cancer Research, the scientists say glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), activated as breast cells undergo stress induced by the agents tamoxifen and fulvestrant, turns off apoptosis, a cell death response, and turns on autophagy. In autophagy, the cell “eats” and digests components within the cell body that have been harmed by the drugs, thus providing a blast of nutrients needed to maintain life.

Harvard study shows coffee consumption inversely associated with risk of most common form of skin cancer

Increasing the number of cups of caffeinated coffee you drink could lower your risk of developing the most common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, according to a study published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. The researchers, who are affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston and Harvard School of Public Health, generated their results by conducting a prospective analysis of data from the Nurses’ Health Study, a large and long-running study to aid in the investigation of factors influencing women’s health, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, an analogous study for men. Brigham and Women’s Hospital is part of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

Mass General study identifies potential treatment target in an animal model of pancreatic cancer

Detailed analysis of genes expressed in circulating tumor cells (CTCs) — cells that break off from solid tumors and travel through the bloodstream — has identified a potential treatment target in metastatic pancreatic cancer. In a report that will appear in Nature and has received advance online publication, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center investigators describe finding increased expression of WNT2, a member of a known family of oncogenes, in CTCs from a mouse model of the deadly tumor and from human patients. The Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center is made up of seven member institutions, including Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Surprising Answer To Why Cancer Rate Increases With Age

Cancers are age-related, much more frequent in the old than in the young. A University of Colorado Cancer Center review published in the journal Oncogene argues against the conventional wisdom that the accumulation of cancer-causing mutations leads to more cancer in older people, instead positing that it is the changing features of tissue in old age that promote higher cancer rates in the elderly…

Adult stem cells from bone marrow: Cell replacement/tissue repair potential in adult bone marrow stem cells in animal model

Researchers report promising results from using adult stem cells from bone marrow in mice to help create tissue cells of other organs, such as the heart, brain and pancreas — a scientific step they hope may lead to potential new ways to replace cells lost in diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s.
