ENN: Environmental News Network — Know Your Environment

/health/article/44492 Asbestos, linked directly to mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer, is still present in many products used daily in Lebanon. but there’s no protection for workers or the population at large. ADVERTISEMENT In 1998, Lebanon submitted to popular pressure and banned asbestos imports. In 2000, Eternit, the country’s major importer of asbestos closed down. but almost no action has been taken to prevent usage of remaining asbestos products or to find substitutes for them. Sudden environmental disasters such as the recent carpet fire in Safra and protesters burning rubber tires plague the beleaguered country. but asbestos exposure, which leads to mesothelioma, a fatal form of lung cancer specific to asbestos exposure, is an ongoing issue that isn’t being addressed. the worst part is that the dangerous material is still being imported and used. There are no protected waste dumps for asbestos products in Lebanon. and under an outdated law that permits imports of Crysotile, or “white asbestos,” importers are still bringing in the cancer-linked mineral. the reasoning is that Crysotile is “less dangerous” than other types of asbestos. In an interview with the Daily Star, Dr. Joseph Kattan doctor of hematology and oncology at Hotel Dieu Hospital, describes all asbestos as dangerous and a direct cause of mesothelioma cancer. “Unlike various speculations on other types of cancers, there is clear and strong evidence on the cause and effect relationship between asbestos contamination and malignant mesothelioma (a rare cancer directly linked to asbestos exposure),” Kattan said. “If one type of asbestos is less aggressive, it doesn’t mean that it is not dangerous.” Article continues at Green Prophet Image credit: David Gabel Posts Related to ENN: Environmental News Network — Know Your Environment Mesothelioma Cancer Are Two Words That You Never Want To Hear Come From Your Doctor Mesothelioma cancer is real close to being the most fatal form of cancer that there is. WTRF 7 News Sports Weather – Wheeling SteubenvillePa. high court tosses ‘any dose’ asbestos theory

By RON TODTAssociated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) – the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that civil lawsuit plaintiffs alleging asbestos-related ailments cannot submit scientific testimony asserting that even the smallest exposure to the material could cause cancer. The court said in a 6-0 opinion issued Wednesday that plaintiffs must show some relationship between the amount of exposure and development of the disease. The ruling came in a western Pennsylvania auto mechanic's 2005 lawsuit alleging that exposure to asbestos from brake lining repair over 44 years had caused his mesothelioma. A Superior Court panel said a jury should evaluate the “any exposure” testimony, but the high court said the trial judge “was right to be circumspect” about the underlying scientific methodology. The Philadelphia Inquirer (bit.ly/K0RyeZ ) says attorneys for the plaintiff did not return a phone call seeking comment. Copyright 2012 the associated Press. all rights reserved. Baron and Budd Warns Women About Side Effects of YAZ, Yasmin

DALLAS, may 16, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has recently decided to strengthen warning labels on the oral contraceptive YAZ and its sister drug Yasmin regarding increased risks of blood clots from using the medications. Baron and Budd, a national law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of consumers, is warning women about the new labels and the adverse health effects of YAZ, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella. YAZ, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella belong to a newer family of birth control pills that contain drospirenone (DRSP). Studies have found that women who use birth control pills that contain DRSP are at an increased risk of developing blood clots when compared to traditional birth control pills. the new FDA warnings follow the recommendations of an FDA advisory committee that evaluated the potential health risks of YAZ and other DRSP-containing birth control pills. after reviewing studies of the health risks, the committee recommended stronger warning labels for the DRSP family of drugs. “Women need to be aware of things that could threaten their health,” said Laura Baughman, attorney at Baron and Budd. “Even though YAZ has been aggressively marketed to treat a variety of issues, that does not mean that it can deliver on all of those promises. in fact, in 2008 Bayer was forced to run a $20 million ad campaign to clarify the company’s previous commercials about YAZ, which, according to the FDA, were misleading because the ads promoted YAZ for conditions that it was not approved for and downplayed potential risks of the drugs — like blood clots.” the most common health issues associated with YAZ are blood clots and other problems associated with blood clots such as heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism. More than 10,000 lawsuits have been filed by women who have suffered blood clots and other adverse side effects from taking YAZ or Yasmin, including at least four class action lawsuits. Bayer recently agreed to settle the first group of lawsuits regarding blood clots for approximately $110 million. Other lawsuits are still in process. regardless, it is not too late to file a lawsuit for serious health effects from YAZ, Yasmin, Beyaz or Ocella.
