ADAO to Screen Asbestos Trial Documentary

LOS ANGELES, Apr 25, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) will be screening the documentary Dust: the great Asbestos Trial this Friday to help educate people about the Eternit asbestos trial in Italy and help raise awareness about the public health risks of asbestos. A press conference will follow with Niccolo Bruna, one of the filmmakers behind Dust; Linda Reinstein, co-founder of ADAO; and Pepe Moreno, comic book artist and member of the creative team behind an international awareness comic book. Baron and Budd is a proud 2012 platinum sponsor of ADAO and is honored to support ADAO’s efforts to spread awareness about this landmark asbestos criminal trial. In the trial, two executives of Swiss company Eternit were sentenced to 16 years in prison and fined millions of euros for failing to protect thousands of workers and nearby residents from asbestos exposure in northern Italy. it was one of the largest environmental cases to ever come to trial in Europe, and it could set an international precedent for legal proceedings regarding workplace safety. “We hope that this documentary can serve as a catalyst for international change,” said John Langdoc, mesothelioma lawyer at Baron and Budd. “This trial brought much-needed attention to the devastation asbestos can cause, but the global war against the asbestos industry isn’t over. Asbestos still isn’t banned in the U.S. and its use is still rampant in developing nations.” The screening will be at the Charles Aidikoff Screening Room, 150 S. Rodeo Drive #140, Beverly Hills, CA 90212 from 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. Fri. April 27. Weitz & Luxenberg Secures “Substantial” Settlement for Three Men Killed by Asbestos

Weitz & Luxenberg’s asbestos litigation trial team reached settlements last week in the cases of three men who worked for years around asbestos, ultimately developing cancer. The men filed lawsuits against multiple corporations alleging that the companies knew about the asbestos in their products but sold them anyway. New York City (PRWEB) April 09, 2012 Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C., a nationally-recognized mass tort and personal injury litigation law firm, today announced the successful settlement of three lawsuits filed against major asbestos and manufacturing corporations on behalf of the firm’s clients. The firm described the settlement as comprising a “favorable and substantial” amount. The complaints allege that the plaintiffs – long-time workers in industries that exposed them to toxic asbestos insulation – ultimately developed asbestos-related cancers that led to their deaths. Matt MacIntyre, head of Weitz & Luxenberg’s trial team, said that the settlement would pass to the clients’ families. Anthony Lamano served in the Navy from 1955-57, then worked for years as a boiler technician in Long Island before developing lung cancer. His lawsuit (Index #98-121906, Sup. Ct. NY) was filed and reached the jury selection phase before the defendants named in the complaint agreed to settle. Two other clients’ cases were filed alongside mr. Lamano’s. Lawrence Johnson (Index # 03-100769, Sup. Ct. NY) worked for major power houses and construction sites as an insulator, later developing mesothelioma, a cancer whose only known cause is asbestos. William Barthold (Index # 02-105877, Sup. Ct. NY) worked as a pipefitter after serving in the Navy from 1942-46. He also died of lung cancer. MacIntyre, who was joined by Mike Fanelli on Weitz & Luxenberg’s trial team, said the firm could take pride in securing the favorable settlements, but that their thoughts were with their clients’ families. “I’m happy Weitz & Luxenberg was able to help our clients’ families by securing these settlements, but we realize that financial compensation for lung cancer or mesothelioma is secondary to the important issues – promoting health and justice. our thoughts go out to our clients, who have been resolute throughout this process.” About Weitz & Luxenberg Founded in 1986 by attorneys Perry Weitz and Arthur Luxenberg, Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C., today ranks among the nation’s leading law firms. Weitz & Luxenberg’s numerous litigation areas include: mesothelioma, defective medicine and devices, environmental pollutants, accidents, personal injury, and medical malpractice.
