Week in Review At The Mesothelioma Center: Hope For 2012

The year ended with the pressure intensifying on government leaders in Canada to end any potential loan guarantees for the sputtering asbestos industry, pushing it toward a long-overdue, natural death. The look-the-other-way tolerance may be over. Although investors still are hoping to re-open a recently closed asbestos mine in Quebec early in 2012, pressure from both inside and outside the government  may prevent it from happening now. “We’ve reached a tipping point in our attitude toward asbestos and so has the world,” New Democrat MP Pat Martin recently told the Montreal Gazette. “Canada’s boy-scout image is being tarnished. In many circles, we’ve become an international pariah.” Asbestos is the cause of mesothelioma cancer, and it has been banned in more than 50 countries worldwide. Canada is getting closer to joining them. It was another good week at the Mesothelioma Cancer Center. The city of Everett, Washington agreed to provide lifetime medical monitoring for a group of firefighters who were exposed to asbestos during training sessions back in 2007. The firefighters filed a lawsuit in 2010 when the city balked at the idea of covering all 49 of those who were affected. The asbestos was prevalent in several old homes the city owned and was using to help train the firefighters. Even though officials knew the asbestos was there, the training sessions did not include the typical self-contained breathing gear. Both sides seemed happy by the settlement. The city believes it will save money and protect it from future, costly lawsuits. The monitoring program will cost an estimated $15,000  annually. The firefighters also are covered for up to $750,000 in any health care costs stemming from asbestos exposure. Anyone in New York hoping to apply for help from the Victim Compensation Fund that was created in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, has until Jan. 2, 2012 to drop any pending lawsuit to be eligible. According to the Associated Press, more than 1,600 people were affected by the deadline.  Thousands of firemen, police and other first responders already have experienced health problems from the toxic dust cloud that covered Manhattan in the weeks after the World Trade Center collapsed a decade ago. With so much asbestos in the air, health experts are predicting a rash of mesothelioma cases in the future. It normally takes anywhere from 10-50 years after exposure for mesothelioma to be diagnosed. Also this week, it was announced that Australian investigative reporter Matt Peacock will be the keynote speaker at the 8th annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference in March. The conference will be in Los Angeles. The Conference will honor a variety of people, including U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (D-Tennessee) for his work toward asbestos awareness. All across America, older schools are facing the prospect asbestos abatement, which has become a costly but vital expense. The most recent example came from Massachusetts, where the rebuilding of Newton North High School outside of Boston included a $14 demolition. A portion of that demolition included asbestos abatement. Asbestos Opponents Watch as Zimbabwe Mine Reopens

The Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) is rejoicing as the reopening of one of its large asbestos mines draws closer, but those rallying for a worldwide asbestos ban are disappointed that the massive Shabanie-Mashava Mines will soon be in operation once again. According to several articles in the Zimbabwe press, the corporation is close to completing a feasibility study that will allow the mine to begin harvesting asbestos once again, a boon for the town in which it is located. Formerly privately owned but now managed by ZMDC on behalf of the federal government, the mine collapsed in 2008, leaving about 3,000 workers without jobs and turning the local area into a veritable ghost town. The mine, set to open in about 90 days, was once of the largest producers of asbestos in the country, producing about 200,000 metric tonnes of the mineral every year. According to reports, the Shabanie-Mashava Mines had access to several markets around the world including the United States, Britain, Angola, Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, Iran, China, India, Zambia, and Indonesia. It is believed that this particular mine is sitting on at least 20 years of reserves of raw asbestos , a factor that proponents say will help “strengthen the construction and manufacturing industries” in the country and around the world. Opponents of asbestos mining and export, however, see this as another stumbling block on the way to reaching a worldwide ban on asbestos, which causes myriad diseases when inhaled, including a serious form of cancer known as malignant mesothelioma . Tradesmen who worked in industries that used (or still use) asbestos are at especially high risk for developing mesothelioma. Construction workers , because of the large number of construction-related products that contain asbestos, are extremely susceptible to contracting asbestos lung disorders. Those who work in the mines, despite precautions, also often die at a young age due to asbestos exposure .
