Massachusetts Community Shocked by Asbestos Abatement Bill

School officials at the Newton North High School in Massachusetts expected to pay a hefty sum toward asbestos abatement costs when it demolished the old structure to build a newer campus. What they didn’t expect was exactly how much the abatement would cost them – almost $14 million. That’s nearly double the budget the school originally had for asbestos abatement costs. In fact, with the costs of asbestos removal at the school included, it makes the new Newton North High School the most expensive high school ever built in Massachusetts, which is not making many residents and tax payers very happy. The $14 million bill came as the result of having to deconstruct the old high school brick by brick to avoid polluting the air with dangerous asbestos fibers that are known to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. A multitude of asbestos-related lawsuits, along with pressure from state and federal environmental standards, persuaded the district to take extreme precaution with the project. Mixed Emotions Surround Asbestos Abatement Although many residents are outraged at the steep costs associated with asbestos abatement at the Newton North High School, parents, teachers and school officials are relieved and comforted knowing that the building was properly abated and no threats of asbestos contamination remain. Despite the price of the abatement, it is possible that the millions spent in abatement costs could pale in comparison to possible future lawsuits from those exposed to the mineral due to improper, although more affordable, asbestos removal from the building. Asbestos is a fire-retardant, naturally occurring mineral that was used heavily in construction between the 1950s and 1970s, despite confirmations that the mineral caused serious health conditions and even fatalities in those exposed to it. Although asbestos is no longer used in to build homes, schools and other structures, many buildings still contain the mineral. The Environmental Protection Agency requires professional handling and abatement of asbestos in those buildings before they can be demolished in order to avoid causing workers and building occupants to develop potentially deadly diseases.

Asbestos blamed for death of Cumbrian man, 59

Last updated at 12:14, Friday, 16 December 2011 A Cumbrian man this week become the latest person in the county whose premature death has been put down his exposure to asbestos. Lawyers said that the family of James MacKenzie, who was just 59 when he died from mesothelioma, will continue to fight for justice. At an inquest in Carlisle, north and west Cumbria coroner David Roberts ruled that mr MacKenzie, of Hadrian’s Avenue, Anthorn, near Wigton, died as a result of contracting an industrial disease after exposure to asbestos dust. Mr MacKenzie’s health problems came after working at a Carlisle building firm between 1969 and 1972. As an apprentice, he was exposed to dust from sheets of asbestos as it was cut. Mr MacKenzie became ill in August last year and two months later, after further medical investigation, doctors diagnosed malignant mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lung invariably caused by exposure to asbestos dust. He died at the Cumberland Infirmary last December, the inquest heard. Before his death, mr MacKenzie recalled that during his apprenticeship asbestos was widely used for soffits on houses and in sheeting used for roofs and to line ceilings. He said that he would often have to help unload the material and would end up covered in asbestos dust. He leaves his devastated children Cheryl, and John, both in their 30s. Commenting on his family’s loss, John said this week: “Dad worked incredibly hard all his life and it seems so unfair that work he did so long ago took him from us. “we miss him terribly and to know that simple steps could have been taken to protect him is hard to bear.” Roger Maddocks, an asbestos expert at Irwin Mitchell’s Newcastle office, who is acting on behalf of the family said: “As result of this cruel illness, James’s family have been robbed of their future together. “James was only 59 when he was snatched from his family due to mesothelioma cancer. “Today’s inquest verdict confirms that James died as a direct result of being exposed to asbestos. On behalf of his family we are continuing the legal battle for justice.” first published at 11:26, Friday, 16 December 2011 Published by newsandstar.co.uk Posts Related to Asbestos blamed for death of Cumbrian man, 59 Inquest rules asbestos led to death of man, 61 last updated at 14:24, Friday, 09 December 2011 A DEVOTED husband and father died from industrial disease, a coroner ruled. A Lung Cancer Survivor’s Story and the Value of Early Detection

It was the summer of 2009, when Barbara was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer. Barbara was 69 years old and had been dealing with a persistent case of what was initially diagnosed as bronchitis. She was a long term smoker, with over 30 pack years (number of years times number of packs/day), and like many smokers, had occasional respiratory issues. Barbara had also undergone imaging recently which had shown a pulmonary nodule but nodules are also common in long term smokers. Some recent studies have shown that as much as 50 percent of long term smokers exhibit pulmonary nodules with most of them being benign. Given the pulmonary nodule and ongoing respiratory symptoms, her pulmonologist recommended EarlyCDT-Lung as an additional biological tool in addition to imaging to assist them with Barbara’s case. EarlyCDT-Lung is a simple blood test to aid physicians in risk assessment and the early detection of lung cancer in high risk patients; most notably long term smokers and former smokers. Barbara’s EarlyCDT-Lung results came back positive. In combination with the previous respiratory symptoms and imaging she was referred to a thoracic surgeon in Tennessee for further assessment. The surgeon conducted a biopsy of the pulmonary nodule. during the biopsy the nodule, under pathological examination, was determined to be a Stage 1A non-small cell lung cancer. The surgeon proceeded to complete a resection of the nodule at that time. After a successful surgery, Barbara was released with a very positive prognosis which included no chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Let’s fast forward to the fall of 2010, as a British TV crew with the national broadcast channel ITV visited Barbara at her home in Kentucky to interview her on her successful battle with lung cancer. New York Attorney Supports Resolution to Designate "Asbestos Awareness Week"

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 29, 2011 a resolution by U.S. Senator Max Baucus to designate the first week of April as Asbestos Awareness Week is a much-needed step in the process to build awareness about mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, says new York Mesothelioma lawyer Joseph W. Belluck. This is the fifth year that Senator Baucus has introduced a resolution for an Asbestos Awareness Week. According to Senator Baucus, this resolution is just one more way to honor the nearly 300 people in Libby, Montana who have died from asbestos-related diseases, many of whom worked at a W.R. Grace vermiculite mine that was shut down in 1990. “Senator Baucus’ resolution and Asbestos Awareness Week shine a spotlight on the impact asbestos-related disease has on its victims and their families,” says Joseph Belluck, a founding partner at Belluck & Fox, LLP who concentrates on mesothelioma and asbestos cases. “Hopefully, this awareness stimulates interest in finding more effective treatments for victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.” The Asbestos Awareness Week resolution points out that the expected survival rate for mesothelioma victims is six to 24 months, and that early detection may give some patients additional treatment options. Baucus’ resolution asks the Surgeon General to warn people about asbestos-related public health issues. Symptoms of mesothelioma—a cancer of the lining of the lungs, chest, or abdomen caused by exposure to asbestos—can appear 10 to 60 years after exposure. Over the years, workers in maritime, industrial, and construction industries have inhaled asbestos fibers and dust, leading to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 2,700 people in the United States die each year from mesothelioma.
