Veronica Fortuin is a 53-year-old ovarian cancer survivor who lives in the Western Cape who is employed as a sales rep for a packing material company. In 2010, she started to feel pain in her abdomen. Veronica went to the doctor and she was prescribed pain medication. When the pain didn’t subside after a week, she revisited her doctor. The consequent abdominal scan revealed her ovaries were enlarged. Thereafter, Veronica was referred to a gynecologist. The following Tuesday Veronica was notified that she had cancer in her left ovary and that it was very aggressive. She says that “cancer” had never even crossed her mind while she was going through this process — also because there is absolutely no history of cancer in her family. Veronica took her doctor’s advice and was immediately admitted to hospital for tests and surgery. Her chemotherapy began two months later. After a three-month break, another round of tests were done and the results revealed that she was clean of cancer. Her whole experience was exceptional. The claim was paid quickly, people called constantly to check how she was doing and everything just happened smoothly.
